Pinckney, MI – North Star Reach, the ninth U.S. residential camp in the SeriousFun Children’s Network founded by actor and philanthropist Paul Newman, is proud to announce its recognition as a 2025 Champion for Children by the LACASA Center’s Child Abuse Prevention (CAP) Council and Great Start Livingston. The award was presented during the annual “Plant a Pinwheel” celebration at the Howell Carnegie District Library, marking the start of National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
As a Champion for Children, North Star Reach was acknowledged for its commitment to providing inclusive and accessible camp experiences for children with serious health challenges. The nonprofit camp fosters connections, joy, and confidence for families navigating medical journeys, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to experience the magic of camp, regardless of their health circumstances.
“We are incredibly honored to be recognized as a Champion for Children,” said J.J. Lewis, CEO of North Star Reach. “This award reaffirms the importance of what we do – creating a community where children facing serious health challenges can thrive, feel a sense of belonging, and build lifelong memories. It’s a privilege to partner with organizations like LACASA and Great Start Livingston to support children and families in our community.”
The “Plant a Pinwheel” event featured uplifting music by the Voyager Elementary School choir and the coloring of blue pinwheels, which serve as a national symbol of child abuse prevention. The event also provided an opportunity to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect, reminding attendees that 1 in 7 children in the U.S. experience abuse or neglect each year.
Throughout the month of April, LACASA’s CAP Council will continue to host events and training sessions focused on child safety, brain development, and the importance of prevention.
Volunteer and Community Engagement Opportunities
North Star Reach invites members of the community to get involved by volunteering at its upcoming events and programs. Volunteers are crucial to the camp’s mission of providing transformative experiences for children and families. Here are some ways to participate:
- Spring Work Weekend (May 2-4, 2025): Volunteers are invited to help complete tasks on the Facility Director’s “To Do” list, with opportunities for fellowship and fun on Friday and Saturday nights. Family-friendly accommodations are available.
- Open House (May 17, 2025): A community event where attendees can tour the camp, learn more about the programs, and see firsthand the impact North Star Reach has on children’s lives.
- Family Camp Weekends (2025): Volunteers are also needed to support camp activities, provide assistance to families, and help create a welcoming environment for campers during these special weekends.
